Total lies (NST and Utusan) and censorship is another. Malaysian Insider does a good job of keeping things unbiased carrying Bernama and even Utusan columns. I don't read Malaysian mainstream news as they may be outright fabrications. Censorship is another. You can have different bias on say Scorpene case, but in Malaysia, mainstream media has total news black out.

Malaysia has no freedom of press.

Re: No longer affiliated with MNCC and TeAM

Greener pastures :-)

my current plan to try to do this sustainable is to adopt a similar model like webcampkl - ie: regular barcamps instead of normal meetup ..

for fedora.my , we'll be doing barcamp style FADs at least once every release .. once every release mainly due to we dont have the capacity to run it monthly .. too frequent ..

not sure how it'll really work out, but worth a try , and fudcon is our stepping stone to accelerate the bi-annual FAD ..

btw fudcon : http://fedora.my/events/fudcon...

(theres also campuscamp.org, but that is a different story)

Re: A few thoughts on the startup ecosystem in Malaysia

Now with a list of meetups... how do we ensure that they keep on going? Resources, etc. are required (as well as attendees).
Sustainable meetups are what is required. Then 18-24 months from there, we'll see greater success and intermingling and networking amongst the meetup crowd which can only lead to further excellence

Re: A few thoughts on the startup ecosystem in Malaysia

Here's the list of FB group communities that I've compiled. I totally had no idea about fedora meetups or even python meetups. It seems to be that the largest community not spread by language now is webcampkl. I'm glad to see there are still many other meetups. ALso wish there was a list (there used to be, its since gone missing).
And yes, awesome news re:FUDCon APAC

P/S: nothing hip & cool about the startup scene per se. 'tis a lot of hype. Helped by media. And loud voices.

Re: A few thoughts on the startup ecosystem in Malaysia

I know we're not as hip and cool as the startup scene but don't forget about fedora.my and the fact that the Malaysian community lead by Izhar is hosting FUDCon APAC this May after two recent FADs. There is also python.my meetups by sweemeng. #myoss is still full of lively chatter.

Re: Messenger apps revisited

Absolutely. It just miss a good iOS client to work well on mobile. Even MacOS X has native support for it. Khairil of Relationship Status here. Excellent post and I agree with you wholeheartedly, though I'd like to say that though 'Relationship Status' was released in the cinemas which one would argue is the 'traditional' route, I personally don't see anything traditional about it and the DVD's, digital downloads, even blu-ray will be popping up over the coming months (and surprisingly, digital downloads and streaming are the trickiest ones to pull of at the moment).

New media has always been on the forefront in my mind but there's a reason why the movie was released cinematically first which will be uncovered in a full post on my blog on how the film was released, the upcoming home-viewing formats and all the trimmings. It will be posted this Thursday or Friday, and perhaps that'll give you some hope that some of the indies are attempting in their own ways to go the 2.0 route.

So please don't feel sad, sir, and don't take this comment as a defensive gesture in any way, but I felt the need to comment because I feel that your comment that the indies are thinking the way the studios are thinking is an assumption based on the fact that the movie came out in the cinema first. I can honestly say for myself and my movie that 'thinking like the studios' is the last way I'd go about thinking about Relationship Status, and quite a few of the other indie filmmakers I know would argue the same about the way they go about their flicks.

Re: On killing Hollywood

You said: "But independent films rarely cover comedy, action, etc."
I say: "StarWreck 6 is an example of community created independent film which covers comedy, action, etc."

Re: Growing out of Foursquare

I never really got into the foursquare craze... it just seems too trivial: I meet people for the sake of meeting people not playing games or adding points somewhere... cool read.

Re: Growing out of Foursquare

Duplicates.
